We have limits for the president so no one person has power too long. How about for senate and congressional positions?

There is an ugly side to politics in each party that comes with seniority in the system. People begin to do and expect “favors” and that is something that comes from being in the position for a long time. It is not just a problem with lobbyists, but happens from within the ranks themselves. Placing term limits even at 8, 12 or 16 years would limit the power that a specific person can gain over time just like the limits we impose on the president for the same reasons. Why are there no limits yet for the house and senate?

Recently I have been studying about the economy in our great nation and the looming problems that we face. It is reported that the country is currently in 53 trillion dollars of debt – over $400,000 per household. This is ridiculous. If our government were a corporation, we would round them all up and haul them off to prison for the type of spending and corruption that is taking place. Remember Enron, Worldcom, Tyco, Martha Stewart and others? The crimes they committed are nothing compared to what is taking place today.

We are at a crossroads… There is very little time to take aggressive action to fix the problems that we face. If we sit still and do nothing we will be like the families who have purchased too large a home, to fancy a car or filled up the old credit card so high that they struggle just to make the minimum interest payments each month. The government is out of control and we have to make change – and it needs to happen soon.

CHANGE HURTS – Do you know what the most expensive parts of our government are right now? Military spending, Medicare and Social Security. If you dont beleive me, go take a look at the US Governments 2008 budget. Yeah thats right, they post it in plain sight yet hardly anyone ever seems to take a look at where everything is going – http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2008

What do I mean by change hurts?  Well, if we make changes to the system it will hurt someone somewhere.  If you lower social security payments it hurts our retirees.  If you lower medicare benefits it hurts a vast number of people who rely on it.  The question is how do we fix the problem for the greater good of our country and how will those who are affected be taken care of?   If we continue at the current pace, we all lose.

I hope that opens your eyes a bit and makes you feel a pit in your stomache. It scared me when I first looked at the budget and where we are headed. The numbers are not that daunting until you realize that the 1,000 really is in millions or billions, not just 1,000.   Anyway, take a look and feel free to comment in the forums.

Politics in America has evolved continually since the inception of the first continental congress, founding of this great nation and the appointment of our first president. For years I have watched from the sidelines and seen how the political process takes place in the US and often I have wondered if it is for me. I have always had my own ideas as to how things should work. I am sure you have considered making some changes to the government during your life as well. The big question is: can we put our ideas together and come up with solutions that are plausible, responsible and sustainable.

Plausible – In order to create change, legislation must be put forward that can be supported by all sides – solutions that Americans from all facets of life can agree on and work toward.
Responsible – The goal of this site is to develop legislation that has fiscal, moral and generational responsibility. We owe it to our future generations to forgo selfish desires and convenience now so we can provide them with opportunity, safety and stability.
Sustainable – although we cannot always see what the future holds, the goal of government should be to provide protection, infrastructure and services to the population. Good legislation is not made up of quick fixes, rather it is created by well thought out plans that can meet present and future needs.

I hope that you find my ideas and political musings of great interest and I look forward to interacting with a large group of individuals to come up with big ideas that work.
